Je n’ai plus aucun souvenir précis de ce que j’ai vu à Singapore. Il me semble que nous avons roulé en autobus dans un parc très vaste, appartenant au Jardin de Plantes qui passe pour le plus grand de l’Orient. Devant nous, les arbres tropicaux lançaient vers le ciel leurs grands troncs robustes, couronnés de magnifiques feuillages verts, et les parterres étalaient la multicolore somptuosité de leurs fleurs épanouies. Puis nous nous sommes promenés dans rues de la ville, que les lourds rayons solaires étouffaient sous un silence éblouissant. L’ensemble donnait l’impression d’un mélange de couleurs orientales et occidentales. Nous déjeunâmes dans un restaurant entouré de dattiers, splendide comme un palais.

I don’t have any more precise memory of what I have seen in Singapore. It seems to me that we have rolled by bus in a very vast park, belonging to the Jardin des Plantes, which is thought to be the largest in the Orient. In front of us, the tropical trees lanced toward the sky their grand robust trunks, crowned with magnificent green foliage, and the flowerbeds spread out the multicolored sumptuousness of their blooming flowers. Then we strolled through the streets of the city, which the heavy solar rays suffocated under a dazzling silence. The ensemble gave the impression of a mixture of eastern and western colors. We had lunch in a restaurant surrounded by date palms, splendid as a palace.
