Devant cette photographie, je me mis à imaginer, avec la déformation du romancier, les sentiments d’une jeune femme qui n’avait pu résister au besoin de glisser son portrait dans les cahiers destinés à sa fille, et je me sentis très ému. Ses pensées, ses vœux, elle pouvait les transmettre par écrit ; elle avait voulu y ajouter son image. Son mari en épouserait une autre et son souvenir s’effacerait de la mémoire de sa fille. Elle s’était préparée à cette éventualité. L’enfant serait heureuse de connaître un jour les traits de sa mère. C’était le geste d’une femme, mais aussi la preuve de l’amour passionné d’une mère. Les yeux du portrait semblaient me regarder fixement.
Avant de prendre connaissance du premier cahier, j’ouvris le cahier numéro 2. Je lus la première page :
« Vivre est un bonheur, même quand ce n’est que de regarder le ciel tous les jours. »

In front of this photograph, I began to imagine, with the distortion of a novelist, the feelings of a young woman who could not resist the need to slip her portrait into the notebooks intended for her daughter, and I felt much moved. Her thoughts, her wishes, she could transmit them in writing; she had wanted to add her image to it. Her husband would marry another and her memory would be erased from her daughter's memory. She had prepared for this eventuality. The child would be happy one day to know the features of her mother. It was the gesture of a woman, but also proof of a mother's passionate love. The eyes of the portrait seemed to be looking at me fixedly.
Before reading the first notebook, I opened the notebook number 2. I read the first page:
"Living is a joy, even when it is only to look at the sky every day. "
