Ayant mis nos vêtements d’été, nous nous dépêchâmes de monter sur le pont. Ravis de retrouver ce temps éblouissant, après les sombres journées de navigation, nous dévorions des yeux la terre où habitaient les hommes, pris du désir irrésistible d’y poser nos pieds. Le commissaire du bord avait organisé une visite du jardin botanique et des principales curiosités de Singapore. Nous devions, naturellement, y participer.
Les préparatifs de l’excursion et le contrôle des autorités du port retardèrent le débarquement. Tandis que nous attendions, ma curiosité fut attirée par des cris bizarres qui montaient de la mer tout autour du bateau ; on aurait dit un chant plaintif, ou l’appel de certains animaux.
Je laissai Miyamura s’occuper du contrôle et je montai sur le pont, désireuse de savoir ce que signifiaient ces cris.

Having put on our summer clothes, we dispatched us to mount on the deck. Delighted to find again this dazzling weather, after the gloomy days of navigation, we eyed intently the land where the men lived, taken by the irresistible desire to put our feet there. The ship's commissioner had organized a visit to the botanical garden and the principal curiosities of Singapore. We had to participate, of course.
The preparations for the excursion and the control of the port authorities delayed the disembarkation. While we waited, my curiosity was drawn to the bizarre cries that rose from the sea all around the boat; it sounded like a plaintive song, or the call of certain animals.
I let Miyamura occupy himself of the control and mounted on the deck, desirous to know what the cries meant.
