L’heureux vainqueur leva fièrement la pièce d’argent vers le pont puis l’introduisit dans sa bouche ; et il se mit à guetter la chance suivante. Ces enfants se déplaçaient dans l’eau avec l’aisance et la vélocité de certains animaux aquatiques, maniant leurs légers esquifs comme des espèces de chaussures ou des skis. C’était un véritable spectacle acrobatique.
L’exemple de l’étranger fut imité. D’autres passagers qui regardaient, appuyés au bastingage, se mirent à jeter dans l’eau des pièces de cuivre ou d’argent. À voir ces corps nus se mêler et se poursuivre sous l’eau autour d’une pièce de monnaie, on eût dit des carpes dans un étang se disputant un morceau de pain. C’était un spectacle extraordinairement passionnant.
