Ma femme entra et, bien qu’elle tombât de sommeil, se mit à me harceler de questions, voulant savoir ce qu’avait dit le docteur. Je protestai avec impatience que j’avais à travailler et la priai de descendre me préparer une tasse de thé en poudre. Je voulais commencer tout de suit ma lecture et achever, fût-ce au prix d’une veille.
Je brisai avec précaution le cachet de cire rouge. De l’enveloppe je sortis trois épais cahiers. Une odeur de pharmacie me monta au nez. Sans doute le docteur, en professionnel, les avait-il désinfectés avant de les cacheter. Ils sont restés présents à ma mémoire, ces cahiers à couverture bleu clair, faits de papier solide, dont font usage tous les étudiants de l’Université de Paris. Chacun portait un numéro inscrit à la plume, J’ouvris le numéro 1.

On return home, I immediately locked myself in my study, eager to know the contents of the envelope. I carefully broke the seal of red wax. From the envelope I took out three thick notebooks. An odor of medicament mounted to my nose. No doubt the doctor, as a professional, had disinfected them before sealing them. They are still present in my memory, those notebooks with light blue covers, made of solid paper, which are used by all the students of the University of Paris. Each had a number written in pen. I opened number 1.
