Voici ces notes ! C’est un journal que Shinko a tenu, quotidiennement parfois, au cours de sa convalescence solitaire. En le lisant, je me suis rendu compté combien je connaissais peu ma femme. Nous avions eu plusieurs années de vie commune et je croyais notre intimité parfaite. Je fus surpris et attristé de découvrir que je représentais pour elle un homme si différent de celui que je croyais être. Shinko avait eu raison de m’en interdire la lecture. Elle l’avait écrit non comme un roman, mais pour transmettre à la fille qu’elle ne pourrait élever les intentions et les vœux d’une mère. C’était un examen mûrement pesé, sans l’ombre d’une hypocrisie. Il m’aida à faire un retour sur moi-même et sa lecture me fortifia.

Here are those notes! This is a diary that Shinko kept, sometimes daily, during her lonely convalescence. Reading it, I realized how little I knew my wife. We had several years of common life and I believed our intimacy was perfect. I was surprised and saddened to find that I represented to her a man so different from who I thought I was. Shinko was right to forbid me to read it. She had written it not as a novel, but to convey to the daughter that she could not raise the intentions and wishes of a mother. It was a carefully considered examination, without the shadow of hypocrisy. It helped me reflect on myself and its reading strengthened me.
