Je revois, aussi vivement que si c’était hier, l’instant où le paquebot « Hakusan Maru », à destination de Marseille, accostait au débarcadère de Singapore.
La cabine en face de la nôtre était occupée par une femme japonaise d’une trentaine d’années, accompagnée de son fils, métis d’Anglais, âgé de trois ou quatre ans. Elle était d’une constitution particulièrement robuste, qu’on trouve rarement chez nos femmes, impeccablement habillée à l’européenne. Sa démarche souple et légère n’avait rien à envier à celle des autres femmes européennes à bord.
Vêtue moi-même pour la première fois a l’européenne pour ce voyage, je m’efforçais d’imiter, sans trop me trahir, cette femme, Hatsoko Mcdonald, tantôt m’appliquant à marcher à l’aise dans ces chaussures dont je n’avais pas l’habitude, tantôt la regardant ravie, caressant l’espoir qu’un jour il me serai possible de marcher moi aussi avec cette souplesse et cette légèreté, parmi les femmes européennes.

I see again, as vividly as if it were yesterday, the moment when the liner "Hakusan Maru", bound for Marseille, docked at the Singapore jetty.
The cabin opposite ours was occupied by a Japanese woman in her thirties, accompanied by her son, an English hybrid, aged three or four. She was of a particularly robust constitution, rarely found in our women, impeccably dressed European. Her supple and light walking had nothing to envy to that of the other European women on board.
Dressed myself for the first time in European style for this trip, I tried to imitate, without betraying myself too much, this woman, Hatsoko Mcdonald, sometimes applying myself to walk at ease in those shoes which I I was not used to, sometimes looking at her delighted, caressing the hope that one day it will be possible for me to walk too with this suppleness and this lightness, among European women.
