Je m’étais mariée avec Miyamura alors que je le connaissais à peine. C’est mon oncle Ishizaki qui me l’avait présenté. Mon mari était un homme doux et digne de confiance. Ces quelques mois de vie conjugale me l’avaient confirmé ! « Mon oncle ne m’a pas trompée », pensai-je. Mais la brutalité qu’il me montra ce matin-là me parut révéler un aspect inconnu de son vrai caractère. J’étais profondément choquée et je restai là perplexe, essuyant mes larmes, attendant qu’il m’expliquât la raison de sa sortie brutale. Mais il continuait de fumer en silence, glacial et buté, grimaçant même, par moment, comme un vieillard acariâtre.
Ma figure devint de pierre ; je ne pouvais sourire, encore moins le taquiner en lui demandant :
« Qu’est-ce qui te met ainsi en colère ? »
Le maître d’hôtel vint nous chercher pour débarquer. Et cette atmosphère de tension désagréable dura entre nous tous le temps de notre excursion à terre.

But he continued to smoke in silence, glacial and stubborn, even grimacing at times like a cantankerous old man.
My face turned to stone; I couldn't smile, even less tease him by asking him:
"What puts you so angry? "
The butler came to fetch us to disembark. And this atmosphere of unpleasant tension lasted between us all the time of our excursion to land.
