'Had he and I but met
By some old ancient inn,
We should have sat us down to wet
Right many a nipperkin!
「俺があいつに どこか古めかしい酒場で
出遭ってさえいたのだったら
二人でどっかと腰を据えて、何枚もナプキンを
濡らすほど 飲みあっていたろうに！
'But ranged as infantry,
And staring face to face,
I shot at him as he at me,
And killed him in his place.
「だが歩兵隊として配列されて
顔と顔をにらみあっていたから
あいつが俺を狙ったように 俺もあいつを狙って
その場で 撃ち殺してしまったのだ
'I shot him dead because -
Because he was my foe,
Just so: my foe of course he was;
That's clear enough; although
「俺はあいつを撃ち殺した、そのわけは -
わけは、あいつが俺の敵だったからだ
それだけさ、もちろん俺の敵だったのさ、あいつは。
それははっきりしている。とは言うものの

Off-hand like - just as I -
Was out of work - had sold his traps -
No other reason why.
「あいつもおそらく - 俺とおんなじように -
深く考えもしねえで 兵隊に入ろうとおもったんだろ、
仕事にあぶれてたんだよ - 売れる物 売り尽してたんだろ、
ほかに兵隊になるわけはなかったのよ
'Yes; quaint and curious war is!
You shoot a fellow down
You'd treat if met where any bar is,
Or help to half-a-crown.'

「そうさ、戦争なんて 変ちくりんな奇妙なもんよ！
一つでもバーのある所で会っていりゃ、おごってやったり
半クラウン位までなら 食いもの とってやったりするはずの男を
鉄砲で撃ち殺すんだもんな」
