Tbilisi (Georgia)

Tbilisi has been a capital city since the fifth century, but not always for Georgia. The city has been snatched by various kingdoms through the ages, and you can see those changes in its houses and public buildings. Today, it’s a vibrant blend of old and new.

Looking over the city is the aluminum Mother of Georgia statue, standing 20 meters high. From her base, you have a perfect view of some of Tbilisi’s marvels, including the Peace Bridge and Rike Park.

Not far from the statue is Narikala fortress. It was first built around the year 364. Caliphs and kings expanded it. An earthquake damaged it in 1827 and most of it is now in ruins, but it still has a great view of the Old Town.

Behind the fortress is a lovely waterfall. It’s a short skip to the Old Town and, from there, the charming sulfur baths of Abanotubani.

Close by is the Kura, one of the most important rivers in this part of the world. Follow it south to the Peace Bridge, which opened in 2010. The steel-and-glass bridge takes you to Rike Park and another eye-catching structure: two futuristic buildings called the Music Theater and Exhibition Hall. Stairs lead up into the Exhibition Hall, while the Music Theater gives people a view of the Old Town. Local opinion about the tube-shaped buildings has been divided, but it definitely turns heads.

Finally, don’t miss the chance to visit the Holy Trinity Cathedral, a church like no other. It was finished in 2004 and has pride of place in the center of the city. The interior is vast and filled with gorgeous murals and artworks. (T)
