After Starbucks exit from Russia, a new coffee shop opens with a familiar look
After Russia sent troops into Ukraine, Starbucks closed its coffee shops in Russia. But a nearly identical operation opened in Moscow on Aug. 19.
The name is almost the same: Stars Coffee. The mermaid logo and menu are also similar.
Seattle-based Starbucks was one of many foreign companies to pull out of Russia in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Their depar tures were a psychological blow to Russians. But Russian entrepreneurs saw a chance to make money.
One of those entrepreneurs is Yunus Yusupov, a popular rap artist who performs as Timati. He partnered with restaurateur Anton Pinsky to buy the Starbucks chain.
At a news conference on Aug. 18, they vowed to reopen all 130 or so former Starbucks stores under their new name.
