Foreign visitors to Japan top 100,000 for 4th month in a row, but still very low

The number of foreign arrivals in Japan in July was above 100,000 for the fourth straight month, official data showed on Aug. 17.

Foreign arrivals for July reached 144,500, or 2.8 times higher than in July 2021. But the number represented a 95.2% plunge from the same month in 2019, according to the Japan National Tourism Organization.

Japan reopened its doors to small-scale tours in June, but the number of foreign tourists coming here remained low for the following month, at 7,903.

It is believed the complicated procedures required to visit, such as acquiring a negative coronavirus test result and a visa, are among the reasons for the low number of tourists.

Demand for travel has rebounded as government COVID-19 restrictions on people’s movements have been lifted recently. (Kyodo)
