Tokyo prosecutors arrest former Olympic committee executive on bribery suspicion

A former Tokyo Olympic organizing committee executive who had wielded huge influence in sports circles was arrested by prosecutors Aug. 17 on suspicion of receiving bribes totaling around 51 million yen from major business suit retailer Aoki Holdings.

In addition to Haruyuki Takahashi, 78, a former senior managing director of Dentsu, Japan’s largest advertising agency, the prosecutors arrested Hironori Aoki, the founder and former chairman of the retailer, and two other people – Takahisa Aoki, 76, the founder’s younger brother and former vice chairman of the retailer, and Katsuhisa Ueda, 40, an executive of the firm — in connection with the case.

Many Dentsu employees were seconded to the organizing committee’s marketing division, which was in charge of selecting sponsors for the Tokyo Games. The special team of the Tokyo District Public Prosecutors Office believes Takahashi held considerable sway over the organizing committee’s marketing division and had used his position to advocate for Aoki at the company’s behest.
