Removal of nuclear debris at Fukushima power plant to be delayed further to FY2023

The removal of radioactive fuel debris from the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant will be postponed for 12 to 18 months, according to an announcement on Aug. 25.

The announcement was made by the government and the power plant’s operator, Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings. They said they will postpone the removal until the second half of fiscal 2023.

After the massive earthquake and tsunami of March 11, 2011, three reactor units at the power plant suffered meltdowns. Removal of the nuclear debris is the most challenging part of the cleanup work at the plant.

This is the second delay in the removal of debris from the plant’s Unit 2 reactor. It was supposed to begin in 2021 but was delayed due to the pandemic.

The latest postponement is to make improvements to a robot arm for the cleanup. (Kyodo)
