Fleet of hydrogen passenger trains begins service in towns in Germany’s Lower Saxony

The world’s first fleet of hydrogen-powered passenger trains started service on Aug. 24, according to German officials.

The trains replaced 15 diesel trains in the state of Lower Saxony.

The 14 new trains use hydrogen fuel cells to make electricity to run the engines. The German government has backed expanding the use of hydrogen as a clean alternative to fossil fuels.

State governor Stephan Weil said the project was an “excellent example” of Lower Saxony’s efforts to make its economy greener. The project cost 93 million euros (12.8 billion yen).

The trains, made by French company Alstom, are run on routes between four northern towns. The operator is regional rail company LNVG.

By using hydrogen from renewable energy, the trains will save 1.6 million liters of diesel fuel a year, says Alstom. (AP)
