Kishida Cabinet’s approval rate falls to 51.0% from 63.2% in early July
The approval rating for Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s Cabinet has dropped to its lowest level - 51.0% - from a record high of 63.2% just weeks ago, amid controversy over the proposed state funeral for former leader Shinzo Abe and possible ties between lawmakers and the Unification Church, a Kyodo News survey showed July 31.
The survey found 53.3% of respondents opposed the state funeral, while 61.9% said a parliamentary debate on holding the event is necessary.
The dip in the approval rating shown by the nationwide survey over the July 30 to 31 weekend also follows a recent resurgence of coronavirus cases to record numbers.
Amid the spike in COVID-19 cases, the survey showed 53.3% support the government’s coronavirus response, down 7.7 percentage points from the previous poll conducted on July 11 and 12.
The survey yielded responses from 425 people from households with eligible voters on landline phones and 625 mobile phone users. (Kyodo)
