Alors seulement je me souvins de Shinko… Je pensai à ses notes et il me parut que le moment était venu de les remettre à sa fille. Mais j’étais fort embarrassé. Le lendemain, au laboratoire, je sortis les papiers de leur cachette et les apportai à la maison. Je voulais les relire ; la simple vue de l’enveloppe fit remonter à ma mémoire tant de phrases contenues dans ces pages que l’idée de les revoir écrites me remplit d’effroi… Je craignais aussi que cette lecture n’eût sur ma fille une influence néfaste… Non seulement je renonçais à les relire, j’abandonnai l’idée de les lui remettre. Cependant, l’image de Shinko me poursuivait comme un reproche. Je la voyais en rêve…

I wanted to read them again; the mere sight of the envelope brought back to my memory so many sentences contained in these pages that the idea of seeing them written again filled me with fear… I was also afraid that this reading would have a harmful influence on my daughter… Not only I gave up rereading them, I abandoned the idea of hand them over to her.
