Tout au plus trouvais-je un semblant d’explication dans la camaraderie déjà ancienne qui me liait au docteur, ou dans mes relations avec sa fille, une de lectrices passionnées, qui se plaisait à me venir voir souvent.

注）trahissait l’importance ですが、trahir の解釈が悩ましい。豪華な宴が重要性を裏切るとは、どういうことか。派手なことができない時節を考慮して、内々の宴であると称しているが、実は、その重要性を暴露、表していると考えるべきと、何度も再読して考え直しました。質素という表面だが、実は重要であるという、馬脚を現している意味と思います。
