Armchair Traveler
Hua Hin (Thailand)

When Bangkok residents plan a one- or two-night holiday, Hua Hin is high on the list. There’s a good reason for that. It has plenty of resort hotels to pamper you, and a beautiful long, long beach with warm, warm waters.

Stay at a spa retreat and you’ll be a short walk from those soft white-sand beaches. There’s a wide range of water sports to enjoy, including snorkeling and scuba diving, as you’d expect.

Or have an adventure on a hike to Pala-U waterfall in Kaeng Krachan National Park, the country’s largest such park. Water spills gently down several tiers of rocks and birdsong fills the air. Butterflies are also everywhere, especially in the morning. Amateur lepidopterists will be in heaven.

Another lovely day trip is to Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park, about 40 km south of Hua Hin. The main attraction here is Phraya Nakhon Cave. It’s a bit of a climb up to the cave, but you’ll be glad you made the effort. A hole in the ceiling lets sunlight fall onto a pavilion. It was built in 1890 for a king’s visit. Today, it’s catnip for Instagrammers.

Closer to the resort area is Khao Takiap, a hill on a beach just 4 km south. At the top of the hill, enjoy a commanding view of the surrounding area. The most arresting image of the beach that you’ll remember, however, will probably be the tall golden Buddha facing the sea.

Back in Hua Hin, it’s time to sample the cuisine – and Tamarind Market and Cicada Market both have you covered, with every Thai dish you can imagine. Authentically delicious! (T)
