Samurai Blue shirt designer hopes origami patterns will inspire success at World Cup

When Japan’s national men’s soccer team beat the U.S. 2-0 in a friendly in Germany on Sept. 24, players were debuting the official uniform. The design is based on origami paper cranes, or orizuru.

“Orizuru are not just beautiful with their shape; people can also put their wishes and thoughts into them” when they fold them, said Sho Takaki of Adidas Japan, one of the new shirt’s developers.

“The uniforms’ origami patterns reflect that message.”

The origami concept has been well received at Adidas headquarters in Germany, according to the developers. The paper cranes are known worldwide as part of Japanese culture.

The origami patterns appear on the new Samurai Blue shirts. However, the origami patterns are not completed.

“We want the players to wear them on the pitch and bring (the patterns) to completion,” Takaki said. (Kyodo)
