Seuls hommes parmi une clientèle élégante, nous dégustions des sucreries, d’un air grave, étrangers à l’atmosphère efféminée et douce qui nous entourait. Puis, comme nous habitions la rive droite, nous rentrions par le métro ou le tramway. Chaque fois que j’essayais d’entrainer le docteur au café pour prendre un apéritif ou de la bière, afin de faire descendre les sucreries de « La Marquise », lourdes à l’estomac, il répondait invariablement : « Nous irions la prochaine fois ». Il ne l’a jamais fait.
Après le dîner, il m’arrivait d’hésiter à entreprendre la lecture d’un roman pour tuer le temps jusqu’au moment du coucher. Alors, j’étais heureux que le docteur vienne me surprendre et me dise : « Je suis passé vous prendre. Allons au Bois. La lune est si belle ! » Il ne s’inquiétait pas de savoir si cela me dérangeait, comme s’il avait deviné que je ne savais que faire de ma soirée.
