I leant upon a coppice gate
When Frost was spectre-grey,
And Winter's dregs made desolate
The weakening eye of day.
The tangled bine-stems scored the sky
Like strings of broken lyres,
And all mankind that haunted nigh
Had sought their household fires.
雑木林の入口の 門にもたれて僕は見ていた、
（寒霜<さむじも>）が 死霊のように灰じみて青ざめ
（冬）の澱<よど>みが、弱まってゆく昼のまなこを
荒涼とした薄日と化してゆく光景を。
もつれあう蔓草<つるくさ>は 切れてはじけた竪琴の
何本もの弦のように 空に 刻み目をつけ
足繁くこの近くを訪れていた人々の全ては
家庭の炉の光を 求めて去った
The land's sharp features seemed to be
The Century's corpse outleant,
His crypt the cloudy canopy,
The wind his death-lament.
The ancient pulse of germ and birth
Was shrunken hard and dry,
And every spirit upon earth
Seemed fervourless as I.
この陸地の 円みの失せた造作は
この（世紀）の遺骸を延べたもののように見え、
雲満ちる天蓋は この（世紀）の納骨堂の如くに、そして
風は（世紀）の死を悼む哀歌のように 思われた
生殖と生命の 年古りた脈動は
固く乾いて 縮み縮かみ
大地の上の 生気は全て
情熱を失って見えた、僕と同じに。
At once a voice arose among
The bleak twigs overhead
In a full-hearted evensong
Of joy illimited;
An aged thrush, frail, gaunt, and small,
In blast-beruffled plume,
Had chosen thus to fling his soul
Upon the growing gloom.
突如として 頭上の侘しい小枝のなかから
沸き起こった一つの声。心に満ちてあふれ出た
限りない喜びの 夕べの祈りの歌となって
その声は聞こえてきた
繊弱な やせて小さな 年老いたツグミが
強い風に 羽根けばだたせ
つのり来る暗闇のなかへ このように
魂を吐露することを選んでいた
So little cause for carolings
Of such ecstatic sound
Was written on terrestrial things
Afar or nigh around,
That I could think there trembled through
His happy good-night air
Some blessed Hope, whereof he knew
And I was unaware
そのようにまでと恍惚と 声はりあげて
祝いの歌をさえずるための いわれもわけも
遠くにも また近くにも
地上の景色のいずこにも 見えはしなかったので
このツグミの幸せな 良き夜を告げる歌のなかには
神の恵みを知る者のみの（希望）が
うち震えていると 僕には思えたほどだった、
彼が知り、僕が知らない 何らかの（希望）が。
