South of the Line, inland from far Durban,
A mouldering soldier lies - your countryman.
Awry and doubled up are his gray bones,
And on the breeze his puzzled phantom moans
Nightly to clear Canopus: 'I would know
By whom and when the All-Earth-gladdening Law
Of peace, brought in by that Man Crucified,
Was ruled to be inept, and set aside?
And what of logic or of truth appears
In tacking "Anno Domini" to the years?
Near twenty-hundred liveried thus have hied,
But tarries yet the Cause for which He died.'
赤道よりも南、遠い南アのダーバン港より内陸に入ったところに
一人 朽ちてゆく兵士が眠っている - あなたの国の男だ
彼の灰色の遺骸は 身を曲げ 折り畳まれている
そして夜毎に 当惑した彼の亡霊が 澄みきったアルゴ星座の
カノプス星にこう呻くのが風に乗る - 「ぼくは知りたい
あの＜磔刑（たっけい）に処された男＞によってこの世に持ち込まれたはずの
（地上の全てを喜ばす 平和の法）が、いつ、だれによって
無効だと評決され お蔵入りにされてしまったかを。
そしてこれらの年月に『主の歳月』の符丁を貼るとは
いったいどんな論理や真理によるものなのか 問いただしたい
こんな 救世主の符丁のついた二千年近い年月が急いで過ぎていったが
そのためにこそ（彼）が死んだ（大目的）はまだぐずぐずと現れない」
