Le robot parlant mobile a relégué à la case tous les modèles muets et fait déborder le vase pour les opposants aux robots. La plupart des gouvernements ont interdit leur usage sur Terre, sauf à fins de recherche scientifique, entre 2003 et 2007.
-Si bien que Gloria a dû finir par renoncer à son cher Robbie?
- Je le crains. Mais la séparation a dû être plus facile à seize ans qu'à huit. Néanmoins c'était là une attitude stupide et injustifiée de la part de l'humanité. L'U.S. Robots a connu ses pires difficultés financières à l'époque où j'y suis entrée, en 2007. Au début, j'ai bien cru que mon emploi serait supprimé au bout de quelques mois, mais c'est alors qu'on a développé le marché extraterrestre.
- Et dès lors vous étiez tirés d'affaire.
- Pas tout à fait. On a d'abord tâché d'adapter les modèles dont on disposait. Ces premiers modèles parlants, entre autres. Trois mètres cinquante de haut, très frustes, ils ne valaient pas grand-chose. On les a expédiés sur Mercure, où ils devaient aider à construire une station minière, mais ça a été un échec.

-A présent, oui. C'est la seconde tentative qui a réussi. Si vous voulez des détails sur cette opération, jeune homme, je vous conseille d'aller voir Gregory Powell. En collaboration avec Michael Donovan, il a résolu nos problèmes les plus épineux des années 2010 et 2020. Il y a des lustres que je n'ai eu de nouvelles de Donovan, mais Powell vit ici même, à New York. Il est grand-père, une idée à laquelle j'ai de la peine à m'habituer. Je le vois toujours plutôt jeune. Bien sûr, je l'étais aussi.
J'essayai de l'amener à poursuivre : « Si vous voulez bien me donner les grandes lignes, docteur Calvin, je demanderai à M. Powell de compléter par la suite. » Ce que je fis plus tard.
Elle étendit ses mains fines sur la table et les regarda. Il y a deux ou trois exemples que je connais un peu.
Commençons par Mercure, suggérai-je.
Soit. La seconde expédition doit remonter à 2015. Elle avait un but exploratoire et se trouvait financée en partie par l'U.S. Robots et en partie par les Minéraux solaires. Elle comprenait un robot d'un modèle nouveau, encore expérimental, accompagné de Gregory Powell et Michael Donovan.

The mobile talking robot has relegated all mute models to the box and is the final straw for opponents of robots. Most governments banned their use on Earth, except for scientific research, between 2003 and 2007.
-So that Gloria had to end up giving up her dear Robbie?
- I fear it. But separation must have been easier at sixteen than at eight. However, this was a stupid and unjustified attitude on the part of humanity. The U.S. Robots experienced its worst financial difficulties when I joined it, in 2007. At first, I thought that my job would be eliminated after a few months, but that's when we developed the extraterrestrial market.
- And from then on you were out of the woods.
- Not quite. We first tried to adapt the models we had. These first talking models, among others. Three meters and fifty high, very crude, they weren't worth much. They were sent to Mercury, where they were supposed to help build a mining station, but it was a failure.

He's a grandfather, an idea I'm having a hard time getting used to. I still see him as quite young. Of course, I was too. »
I tried to get him to continue: “If you will give me the main points, Doctor Calvin, I will ask Mr. Powell to complete them later. » Which I did later.
She spread her slender hands on the table and looked at them. There are two or three examples that I am somewhat familiar with.
Let's start with Mercury, I suggested.
Either. The second expedition must date back to 2015. It had an exploratory goal and was financed partly by U.S. Robots and partly by Solar Minerals. It included a robot of a new model, still experimental, accompanied by Gregory Powell and Michael Donovan. »
