'And now to God the Father,' he ends,
And his voice thrills up to the topmost tiles:
Each listener chokes as he bows and bends,
And emotion pervades the crowded aisles.
Then the preacher glides to the vestry-door,
And shuts it, and thinks he is seen no more.
「そして最後に 父なる神に」と彼は締めくくる
彼の声は震えるように 教会の頂点のかわらに達する
彼が頭を下げ身を曲げると 聴衆はみな感動にむせぶ
信徒で一ぱいの席や通路に 敬神の情がゆき渡る
説教者は 滑るように祭服室のドアに至り
ドアを閉め、もう聴衆に見られていないと考える
The door swings softly ajar meanwhile,
And a pupil of his in the Bible class,
Who adores him as one without gloss or guile,
Sees her idol stand with a satisfied smile
And re-enact at the vestry-glass
Each pulpit gesture in deft dumb-show
That had moved the congregation so.
そのとき静かにそのドアは少し開いて
バイブル・クラスの彼の生徒の女の子が -
彼のことを虚飾もなく悪企みも知らぬ先生として敬っている子が -
覗き見てしまうのだ、彼女のアイドルがいま満足げな笑みを浮かべて
今しがた会衆を感動の波で洗った
あの説教壇の身ぶり手ぶりを 巧みな だんまり劇で
一つ一つ 鏡の前で再演しているその姿を。
