Tyrannosaurus rex skull unearthed in South Dakota to be auctioned in New York
A Tyrannosaurus rex skull found in South Dakota is expected to sell for at least $15 million (Y2 billion) at auction in New York next month, officials with Sotheby’s said on Nov. 8.
The 91-kilogram skull fossil, nicknamed Maximus, is being sold on Dec. 9, the auction house said. The owner wishes to remain anonymous.
The skull was excavated in 2020 and 2021 in Harding County , South Dakota, where other T. rex skeletons like Sue and Stan have been found, according to Cassandra Hatton, Sotheby’s head of science and popular culture. She called the area “the world capital for T. rexes.”
Sotheby’s experts said the skull was a major find. The 2-meter fossil is about 76 million years old, they said.
There are two large holes in the skull, Hatton said. That’s a sign that the T. rex had “a major battle during its lifetime.” (AP)
