Eiffel Tower to go dark an hour earlier each night as Paris tries to save energy

Lights on the Eiffel Tower will be turned off earlier each night, said Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo on Sept. 13. The iconic tower is normally illuminated until 1 a.m.

Hidalgo said other Paris monuments and municipal buildings will also turn off their lights earlier in the evenings.

The energy-saving measure is an effort to deal with an energy crisis because of the Russian war on Ukraine.

Russia has reduced natural gas supplies to several European countries that support Ukraine. This has sent prices for gas and electricity surging.

Cities throughout Europe face risks of power shortages, rationing and blackouts during winter, when energy demand surges.

French President Emmanuel Macron in July announced a nationwide “sobriety plan” to save energy. Companies have to cut energy use by 10% or their electricity and gas will be rationed. (AP)
