Heraklion (Greece)

In the 1960s and ’70s, the Greek island of Crete was the epitome of cool among the jet set. But you don’t have to be a celebrity to enjoy this Mediterranean gem. Archaeology, myth, stunning beaches and exciting nightlife ― Crete has everything you could want for a knockout holiday.

The island’s history is deep and long. Several civilizations thrived here ― the Minoans and Mycenaeans, the ancient Greeks and Romans, the Byzantines and the Venetians. Learn all about its history, which stretches back 130,000 years at the Heraklion Archaeological Museum.

Then see a real-life Bronze Age site, the ruins of Knossos, just a few minutes south of Heraklion. This huge ancient palace dates back to around 1380 B.C., and was the center of an area where around 18,000 people lived. It is very well preserved. Any tour is bound to include the throne room, with its colorful frescoes.

Take a stroll along the Heraklion waterfront toward the Venetian fort of Koules, which dates from the 16th century. Within its walls, you can see cannons and amphorae, while the top floor has a great view of the ocean and city.

Back to the city, visit the Agios Minas Cathedral, a Greek Orthodox church that was completed in 1895. It’s the largest of three churches within a stone’s throw of each other. As impressive as the exterior is, the interior is gorgeous. Murals on the ceiling tell the story of the birth of Christ.

Finally, this wouldn’t be a Greek island holiday without a beach. Ammoudara Beach is the closest, and its beauty waits for you. (T)
