Notre Dame Cathedral will reopen to public in 2024, says France’s culture minister
Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris is on track to reopen to the public next year, France’s culture minister, Rima Abdul Malak, said on July 28.
“We are confident that 2024 will be the year a large part of this work is completed,” she said as she visited the site. France hosts the Summer Olympics in 2024.
Abdul Malak said the cleanup phase of the restoration project had ended. Rebuilding will start at the end of summer. After it is restored, Notre Dame will reopen to worshippers and the public.
In 2019, a fire gutted the church’s roof and sent its spire crashing down. Images and video of the blaze were seen around the world on TV and social media.
The cathedral will be restored to its previous design, including the 96-meter spire. Notre Dame dates back to the 12th century. The spire was designed by architect Eugene Viollet-le-Duc in the mid-1800s. (Reuters)
