342 VI. In the Cemetery

'You see those mothers squabbling there?'
Remarks the man of the cemetery.
'One says in tears, "Tis mine lies here!"
Another, "Nay mine, you Pharisee!"
Another, "How dare you move my flowers
And put your own on this grave of ours!"
But all their children were laid therein
At different times, like sprats in a tin.
「あの母親たちが口論しているのが見えるでしょう？」
霊園の管理人が語りかけてくる
「一人は涙ながらに（ここに眠っているのは私の子よ！）
もう一人は（違う、うちの子よ この独善者＜パリサイびと＞めが！）
三人目は（よくも私の生けた花を動かして
この私たちの墓に 自分の花を置いたわね！）
でもほんとうは彼女たちの子供たちは別々のときに
皆同じあそこに埋められたのさ、缶詰の小魚みたいに。
'And then the main drain had to cross,
And we moved the lot some nights ago,
And packed them away in the general foss
With hundreds more. But their folks don't know,
And as well cry over a new-laid drain
As anything else, to ease your pain!'
「その上 排水の本管があそこを通らねばならなくなって
幾晩か前に あの区画は移転させたのですよ
ほかの何百体といっしょにあの子たちも 彼らは共通の溝を
掘ってそこに詰め込んだんです、でも遺族たちは知らないんです
だから 悲しみを和らげるためには、あんな新しい排水管の上に
涙を捧げる位なら、ほかの何の上に捧げるのも同じですよ！」
