The Sunrise Club

The weather in Kansai has been cool for a while now. And the sun has been rising a little later. This has made my morning runs along the beach much more pleasant and enjoyable. With the number of coronavirus cases settling down, I also hope that it means I get to see the “Sunrise Club” again.

That’s the name I’ve given to a group of elderly folks whom I used to see during my runs along the beach in cooler weather. They would usually be walking in a group. I just assumed they got together for a chat before or after their morning callisthenics. But then I realised that they actually met up to do something much more heartwarming.

I figured this out the first time I ran into them up close. This was almost literally. They had spread out over the walkway and blocked my way. They were talking excitedly and seemed a bit hard of hearing, so they couldn’t hear my shouts of “Excuse me!” “Coming through!” I’m often worried about being deported, so as the distance between us rapidly closed, I couldn’t help but imagine the headlines about my arrest: “Elderly on morning stroll bowled over by foreigner.” When it was clear that no one had heard me, I slowed down to keep pace with them.

This was before the pandemic, so I wasn’t worried about being so close to others. One of them said, “Let’s try here!” and the others stopped and turned around. I turned around with them to see what they were looking at. It was a glorious red ball slowly making its way up into the sky. The sun rises and sets very quickly here, so I hadn’t really paid attention to my morning run sunrises until I looked at one with them.

The sunrise was absolutely magnificent. For a second, I completely forgot I was supposed to be running and just stared at the sunrise with them. No one wore masks at the time, so I could see them quietly admiring the sunrise, with smiles on their faces. No one took photos. They just took the view in. They only had eyes for the sunrise and didn’t even notice that I was appreciating it alongside them.

At the beginning of the coronavirus outbreak, the Sunrise Club would still gather. But as the infections grew, fewer and fewer members met up. Eventually, I didn’t see the usual group anymore. Has the sun set on the Sunrise Club? I really hope not. With Japan’s ever-growing elderly population, I’m hoping they’ll recruit some new members soon. Who knows? If I live in this neighbourhood long enough, I might one day be joining them in blocking the beach walkway. (Samantha Loong)

***** The Burnt Offering *****

1 And the LORD called unto Moses, and spake unto him out of the tabernacle of the congregation, saying,

2 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, If any man of you bring an offering unto the LORD, ye shall bring your offering of the cattle, even of the herd, and of the flock. (even = indeed 強調)

3 If his offering be a burnt sacrifice of the herd, let him offer a male without blemish: he shall offer it of his own voluntary will at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation before the LORD.

4 And he shall put his hand upon the head of the burnt offering; and it shall be accepted for him to make atonement for him.

5 And he shall kill the bullock before the LORD: and the priests, Aaron's sons, shall bring the blood, and sprinkle the blood round about upon the altar that is by the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.

6 And he shall flay the burnt offering, and cut it into his pieces.
(flay 〈獣〉の皮を剥(は)ぐ (skin).

7 And the sons of Aaron the priest shall put fire upon the altar, and lay the wood in order upon the fire:

8 And the priests, Aaron's sons, shall lay the parts, the head, and the fat, in order upon the wood that is on the fire which is upon the altar:

9 But his inwards and his legs shall he wash in water: and the priest shall burn all on the altar, to be a burnt sacrifice, an offering made by fire, of a sweet savor unto the LORD.

10 And if his offering be of the flocks, namely, of the sheep, or of the goats, for a burnt sacrifice; he shall bring it a male without blemish.

11 And he shall kill it on the side of the altar northward before the LORD: and the priests, Aaron's sons, shall sprinkle his blood round about upon the altar.

12 And he shall cut it into his pieces, with his head and his fat: and the priest shall lay them in order on the wood that is on the fire which is upon the altar:

13 But he shall wash the inwards and the legs with water: and the priest shall bring it all, and burn it upon the altar: it is a burnt sacrifice, an offering made by fire, of a sweet savor unto the LORD.

14 And if the burnt sacrifice for his offering to the LORD be of fowls, then he shall bring his offering of turtledoves, or of young pigeons.

15 And the priest shall bring it unto the altar, and wring off his head, and burn it on the altar; and the blood thereof shall be wrung out at the side of the altar:

(he priest shall bring it to the altar, wring off the head and burn it on the altar; its blood shall be drained out on the side of the altar.)

16 And he shall pluck away his crop with his feathers, and cast it beside the altar on the east part, by the place of the ashes:
(crop 取ったもの)

17 And he shall cleave it with the wings thereof, but shall not divide it asunder: and the priest shall burn it upon the altar, upon the wood that is upon the fire: it is a burnt sacrifice, an offering made by fire, of a sweet savor unto the LORD.

(He shall tear it open by the wings, not dividing it completely, and then the priest shall burn it on the wood that is burning on the altar. It is a burnt offering, a food offering, an aroma pleasing to the LORD.)
