Britain’s Royal Mint unveils first coins to feature portrait of Charles III

Britain’s Royal Mint has unveiled the first coins to feature the portrait of King Charles III.

New 50-pence (Y80) coins depicting Charles will enter circulation from around December. A commemorative £5 (Y820) coin was also released Oct. 3. It depicts Charles on one side and his mother, Elizabeth II, on the other side.

The image was created by British sculptor Martin Jennings, the Royal Mint said on Sept. 30. Jennings said the portrait was sculpted from a photo of Charles.

The king’s portrait faces the left on the new coins. The portrait of Elizabeth faces the right on coins currently in circulation.

According to tradition, “the monarch faces in the opposite direction to their predecessor,” said Chris Barker of the Royal Mint Museum.

There are around 27 billion coins with Elizabeth’s image in circulation in the U.K. All will remain legal tender. (AP)
