Nissan, Honda to boost battery procurement in push to roll out electric vehicles
Two Japanese automakers on Sept. 7 unveiled plans to increase their supply of batteries for electric vehicles.
Nissan Motor said it will buy a key battery supplier, Vehicle Energy Japan. The supplier is based in Hitachinaka, Ibaraki Prefecture. It makes lithium-ion batteries for Nissan vehicles like the Note, the automaker’s flagship compact car.
On the same day, Honda said it will establish a venture in Beijing later in September to procure EV batteries. Honda will join with Chinese companies Dongfeng Motor Corporation and Guangzhou Automobile Group.
Honda said in August that, together with LG Energy Solution, it will spend $4.4 billion (630 billion yen) to build an EV battery plant in the U.S.
Automakers worldwide are expanding their efforts to roll out less polluting electric vehicles. (Kyodo)
