Tomato-throwing festival returns to Spanish town after 2-year pandemic pause

Thousands of revelers threw tons and tons of overripe tomatoes at each other on Aug. 31 during the Tomatina festival in eastern Spain.

It was the 75th edition of the event and the first after a two-year pause due to the pandemic.

The festival started at midday, when six trucks loaded with around 130 tons of tomatoes drove through the main street of the town of Bunol. Organizers spent an hour giving out tomatoes to partygoers. Then the tomato fight started. Partygoers threw the soft fruits at each other until everyone was covered in red juice.

Tomatina is said to have started in 1945. It was banned for a while during the 1950s, but it survived and became popular across Spain in the 1980s.

Today, the festival draws large crowds of visitors from abroad as well as Spaniards.

It became so popular that almost 10 years ago, the organizers had to limit the capacity. (Reuters)
