Uzice (Serbia)

Uzice is a city in western Serbia with a population of just 60,000 and a history stretching back as far as the third century B.C. It may be small, but it has a big place in Serbian hearts.

The main attraction is Stari Grad, a fortress that was first built in the 14th century. Although it is in ruins today, Stari Grad gives the visitor a commanding view of the city and the Detinja River. Walk along its zigzag walls and imagine the fighting in 1459, when the Ottomans captured it.

Mecavnik village is a pleasant day trip with a surprising story. It was built by Cannes Palme d’Or-winning director Emir Kusturica in 2003-2004 for a movie. He has lived there ever since, and streets are named after people he admires, like Nikola Tesla and Diego Maradona. The village is built in an authentic ethnic Serbian style. Of course, there are cinemas and even an annual film festival.

Head northwest about 20 minutes to the village of Kadinjaca to see the Kadinjaca Memorial with its striking slanted design. It remembers the 1941 Battle of Kadinjaca, in which Serbians fought the invading Nazis. A museum displays photos, notes and weapons of Serbian soldiers, who were outnumbered and defeated by the Germans.

A bit further south is the Rujno Monastery, where the first book in Serbia was printed. Today, it’s been rebuilt in medieval style, complete with a bell tower.

Finally, don’t forget to try rakija, a powerful spirit made from fruits like plum and apricot. It’s the national drink, so you know it’s good! (T)
