The US Justice Department has filed an antitrust lawsuit against Google, saying that it uses monopolies to harm competition in the search and advertising markets.

The department filed the suit with the district court in Washington DC, on Tuesday, together with 11 states.

Department officials accuse the search engine giant of entering into agreements with device makers, including Apple and Samsung, to ensure Google is the default search engine on their devices.

Google is also accused of using data obtained from its search service for its advertising business.

The department says these and other practices harm competition and consumers.

Google denies the allegations. A senior official says the lawsuit is "deeply flawed." He says "People use Google because they choose to, not because they're forced to, or because they can't find alternatives."

The official goes on to say "This lawsuit would do nothing to help consumers. To the contrary, it would artificially prop up lower-quality search alternatives," and "make it harder for people to get the search services they want to use."

Analysts say there will be a prolonged court battle between the government and Google over its business model.

The department has investigated tech giants since July 2019 to see whether they are impeding fair competition. The investigation could lead to more lawsuits.
