337 I. At Tea
茶を飲みながら

The kettle descants in a cosy drone,
And the young wife looks in her husband's face,
And then at her guest's, and shows in her own
Her sense that she fills an envied place;
And the visiting lady is all abloom,
And says there was never so sweet a room.
湯わかしが気持ちのよい低温で伴奏する室内で
若妻は夫の顔をのぞきこみ、自分が招いた
女客の顔を見る。そして自分自身の顔のなかに
自分は羨まれている地位にあるとの満足感を露わにする
訪ねてきた貴婦人は花咲くような表情で
こんなすてきなお部屋は見たこともないと世辞を言う
And the happy young housewife does not know
That the woman beside her was first his choice,
Till the fates ordained it could not be so. ...
Betraying nothing in look or voice
The guest sits smiling and sips her tea,
And he throws her a stray glance yearningly.
そして幸せなこの若い主婦は知らないでいる
自分の隣にいるこの客は夫が最初に選んだ女で
運命の定めによって やがてそれが実を結ばなかったことを・・・
客は表情にも声のなかにも何一つ隠し事を漏らすことなく
にこやかな顔をして坐ってお茶をすすっている
夫は思慕をこめたまなざしを ちらちらと客に投げかける
